A punching machine comprises a punch 16 actuated by a solenoid 25 controlled by a switch 35, a wheel 40 rotatable by contact with the work to be punched and having a gear 44 engageable by a toothed segment 45 which is movable into and out of engagement with the gear and operates the switch when in engagement with the gear, and a lever 90 having a part 93 engaging the toothed segment to move the segment out of engagement with the gear and permit rotation of the wheel without actuation of the segment and switch. The toothed segment is mounted on a rod 47 which carries a cam 50 having a projection 51 engageable with a spring-arm 37 of the switch. When the wheel is rotated in one direction by movement of the machine over a workpiece to be punched, the gear 44 rocks the segment 45 which in turn rocks the cam to cause the projection 51 to actuate the switch and energize the solenoid 25. The armature 24 of the solenoid is thus moved downwardly against a light spring 30 so that a block 28 strikes the upper end of the punch which moves downwardly against a heavier spring 22 to punch the workpiece. During the movement of the punch, a surface 56 displaces a ball 57 and the rod 47 against a spring 48 so that the segment is disengaged from the gear and returns to its initial position wherein it reengages the gear when the punch has been returned to its upper position by the spring 22. If the machine is moved over the workpiece in such a direction as to rotate the wheel 40 in the opposite direction, the projection 51 moves in the opposite direction to rock a second cam 60 so that a projection 62 thereon engages the lever to operate the switch. Rocking of the lever 90, which has an enlarged portion 98 adjacent a handle 71, about a pivot 91 and against a spring 96 causes the part 93 to move the rod 47 axially to disengage the segment from the gear without rocking the cam 51 so that the machine can be moved over the workpiece without actuation of the switch. A second lever 67 is movable about a pivot 68 and against a spring 77 to cause a cam-shaped portion 72 to rock the cam 60 and actuate the switch so that a workpiece can be punched independently of the movement of the machine over the workpiece.
