Abstract

An oral preparation for the treatment of disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract, consists of a solid stable suspension of any one of the following cultures: Lactobacilli (L. acidophilus, L. casei, L. plantarum, L. helveticus, L. brevis, L. bucheri, L. fermenti, L. bulgaricus, L. bifidus, and L. thermophilus); Streptococci (S. lactis, S. cremoris, S. faecalis, S. liquefaciens, S. zymogenes, S. durans and S. boris); yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae; S. fragilis, S. delbrueckii, S. lactis, S. chevalieri); miscellaneous bacteria (Leuconostoe dextranicum, L. citrororum, Aerobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, E. freundii and E. intermedia); in an anhydrous sugar-like medium obtained by heating to 135 DEG to 145 DEG C. glucose, sucrose or corn syrup, or a mixture thereof. The culture is dehydrated by lyophilization or spray drying, mixed with powdered skim milk, lactose or malt extract and dispersed in the above sugar base in an anhydrous plastic condition at 100-110 DEG C., cooling and pressing to form hard candies containing from 100,000 to 50,000,000,000 germs each. The candies may be coated with sugar and then, if desired, with an enteric coating.
