Abstract
Pyridine and b -picoline are produced by heating ammonia with a vaporised mixture of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the presence of at least two of the alkanols methanol, ethanol and n-propanol. The reaction is preferably carried out at 300-600 DEG C. in the presence of a condensation catalyst. Suitable catalysts are silica and/or alumina and may also contain an oxide of titanium, zirconium, cerium or thorium. In addition there may be present one or more of the metals zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, palladium or silver or compounds thereof. If desired an inert diluent, such as steam or nitrogen, or a hydrocarbon such as benzene, may be present in the mixture.
