Abstract

Styrene is obtained by the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene vapours mixed with steam in the presence of a fixed bed of a catalyst containing iron oxide and in the form of particles of diameter below 0,0625 inch. The catalyst may be iron oxide stabilized with an oxide of copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, chromium, manganese, cobalt, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, thorium, zirconium, cerium, lead, bismuth, or aluminium and promoted with an oxide of potassium caesium, calcium or strontium. Magnesium oxide may also be present and may be a major ingredient. Temperatures of 550-800 DEG C. are used with 1-30 mols of steam per mol of ethyl-benzene.
