Abstract

Methyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons are demethylated by passing with steam over a dehydrogenation catalyst at 500-1,000 DEG C. The feed may be a methyl or poly-methyl benzene, naphthalene, anthracene or phenanthrene and in the case of poly-methyl compounds one or all of the methyl groups may be removed. The catalyst may be a ferric oxide-potassium oxide, magnesium oxide-iron oxide-potassium carbonate, silica-alumina-nickel, iron oxide-zinc oxide promoted with copper, potassium or sodium, and ferric oxide together with oxides of copper and potassium, magnesium and potassium or chromium and potassium. Atmospheric pressure is preferred and 0.5-10 lb. of steam are added per pound of hydrocarbon. A fixed bed, fluidized bed or tubular reactor may be used.
