Abstract

Dehydrogenation is in the presence of steam and a metal oxide catalyst, at increased temps. Catalyst particles have a spatial configuration such that ratio O/V. 1.000 is >0.2 cm-1 where 0 is geometrical surface of a catalyst particle; V is geometrical vol. of a catalyst particle and 1.000 is non-dimensional resistance coefft. Catalyst activity and selectivity is improved. Styrene yields are increased. Catalyst can be used in standard reactors, esp. tubular reactors without increasing initial press. Catalyst, contg. Fe oxide, Al2O3, CaO, ZnO, K2CO3 and KOH, was used as (A) star-shaped extruders, in which O/V. 1.000 ratio was = 0.358, and as (B) cylindrical control extrudates, in which ratio was 0.109. With (A), a yield of styrene at 595 degrees C and 41.5%, conversion was 92.8%, cf. 89.4% for use of (B) at 609 degrees C and same degree of conversion.
