Abstract
Methyl isopropenyl ketone dimer is converted into its monomer by heating the dimer at a temperature between 196 DEG and 600 DEG C. in the presence of a catalytic amount of a catalyst capable of catalysing the cracking or dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons at an elevated temperature, and recovering methyl isopropenyl ketone monomer from the catalysate. Suitably, the dimer and a cracking catalyst are maintained at about the B.P. of the dimer and the resulting monomer distilled off through a column. Alternatively, the dimer may be passed in vapour phase over a heated dehydrogenating catalyst and the products worked up to recover the monomer. Unchanged dimer may be recycled. Specified cracking catalysts are platinum group metals, activated Al2O3 and activated N : and specified dehydrogenating catalysts are activated Al2O3, a Ni-Ca-PO4, MoO3 on Al2O3 and ferric oxide containing catalysts.
