Abstract
<PICT:0929442/IV(a)/1> An ungelled polyvinyl chloride composition is fed on to an endless belt of a silicone elastomer bearing a negative of a fine pattern, the belt carrying the composition is run through a heating chamber to cause the polyvinyl chloride to emerge as a gelled layer on the belt, the layer cooled, and then stripped from the belt, so producing a film or sheet bearing a fine relief pattern. The composition may be a polyvinyl chloride plastisol consisting of particles of polyvinyl chloride suspended in a plasticizer. The polyvinyl chloride may be modified by the inclusion of a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride in which vinyl chloride is the major constituent. Specified plasticizers include dioctyl phthalate, trixylenyl phosphate, and a mixture of dialkyl phthalates in which the alkyl groups have 7-9 carbon atoms. Heat-stabilizers, e.g. calcium stearate, cadmium and barium laurates, and pigments may also be present in the composition. In apparatus as shown, an endless silicone elastomer belt 1 is supported by water-cooled roller 2 and the rollers 5, 6 joined by a thick endless rubber belt 4. The polyvinyl chloride composition is fed from reservoir 8 to the belt at 21, the thickness of the coating being regulated by doctor blade 9, and then passes through heating chamber 7 maintained at 160 DEG -200 DEG C., preferably 170 DEG -180 DEG C. Cooling is effected by passing the coated belt over the water-cooled roller 3, the back of the belt is cleaned by rotary brush 3 and the film or sheet is stripped from the belt at 13, and wound up at 19. 20 is a roll of backing material which may be applied to the film or sheet as shown via rollers 10, 11 and 12 to form a laminate (see Group VIII). Specifications 841,825, 844,128 and U.S.A. Specification 2,983,694 are referred to.
