929,270. Making mouthpiece cigarettes. T. ROWLANDS, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Oct. 9, 1959 [Oct. 9, 1958], No. 32250/58. Class 130. Composite filter mouthpieces for insertion between cigarette rods 6, Fig. 5 (the mouthpieces, and the rods 6 if a continuous-rod process is in use, being subsequently subdivided to form hollow mouthpiece cigarettes) comprise outer and inner stubs 2, 3 of different filter material, e.g. crepe paper and a chemical or chemically - treated material, respectively, wrapped in a paper tube, the mouthpieces having been formed from a multiple-length portion, Fig. 4, of a continuous rod by subdivision of double-length inner stubs 33. As shown, the rod is formed by wrapping in thin paper 5 alternate paper-wrapped inner stubs 33 (formed by subdivision of a rod) and units formed by subdivision of a multiple-length portion, Fig. 2, of a continuous rod having spaced double-length outer stubs 22 wrapped in stiff paper 1. Alternatively, a rod of stubs 22, 23, Fig. 6, wrapped in thin paper 25 is subdivided across the stubs 22 and the units so formed are spaced apart and wrapped in stiff paper for subsequent subdivision across the stubs 33. The subdivision across the stubs 22 may be carried out in stages so that multiple-length rods are intermediately formed.
