Abstract
929,118. Welding by fusion. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. July 30, 1959 [July 30, 1958], No. 24620/58. Class 83 (4). In an arc welding device for butt welding tubes 10, 12, a torch 14 having a tubular shield 22, e.g. of a ceramic, is mounted on ring members 17, 19 with the axis of the shield parallel to the axis of the tubes 10, 12 and is rotatable about the tubes, and an electrode 20 projects radially inwards towards the joint through an aperture 24 in the side wall of the shield 22. The ring members 17, 19 are enclosed by a cylindrical or square casing 40 at least a part of which is transparent and argon is passed through the shield 22 and the aperture 24 and is piped from the interior of the casing 40 to the interior of the tubes 10, 12. The electrode 20 is a tungsten needle mounted in a ribbed mild steel holder 26 to which the supply cable 30 is connected. A clamp 42 fixed to the tube 10 carries a worm 44 driven by a motor and engaging a worm-wheel on the rotatable ring member 19. The ring member 17, which is a loose fit on the tube 12, is steadied by spring-loaded balls 48. The tubes are first tack welded by the electrode 20. Subsequently the arc is struck and after complete penetration has been achieved the torch 14 is rotated to complete the weld with a slight overlap. The current is reduced gradually to prevent formation of a crater. If desired, a fusible insert is placed between the tubes. The device is used for the welding of closely spaced tubes in a heat exchanger.
