Abstract
Iso coumarin carboxylic acids having the general formula <FORM:0929051/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 represents hydrogen or one or more alkoxy groups are prepared by condensing in an alcoholic solution a phthalaldehydic acid of the formula <FORM:0929051/IV(a)/2> wherein M represents hydrogen or a monovalent metal atom with an oxazolone-5 of the formula <FORM:0929051/IV(a)/3> wherein R2 is an aromatic hydro carbon radical, yielding an az lactone of the general formula <FORM:0929051/IV(a)/4> which is thereafter saponified by refluxing in an alkaline solution having a concentration of at least 10% of alkali hydroxide and then acidified. In examples: (1) 2-phenyl oxazolone-5 is reacted with an alcoholic solution of potassium opianate yielding the potassium salt of the resulting az-lactone which is recovered in the free form and saponified by refluxing in aqueous NaOH and the desired 7,8-dimethoxy 3-carboxyisocoumarin is recovered and converted into its methyl ester; (2) o-phthalaldehydic acid is similarly reacted yielding iso couramin acid. 2-Phenyl oxazolone-5 is prepared by reacting hippuric acid with acetic anhydride.
