Abstract
1432518 Chrysanthemic acid SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 23 Aug 1974 [27 Aug 1973 22 Nov 1973 30 Nov 1973] 37130/74 Heading C2C Cis-chrysanthemic acid is obtained by treating a mixture of cis-chrysanthemic acid and isocis-chrysanthemic acid with water in the presence of an acid catalyst to convert the isocis-chrysanthemic acid selectively to cis-dihydrochrysanthemolactone, adding an aqueous alkaline hydroxide to the mixture to form a phase containing neutral lactone and a phase containing the acid and separating the phase containing the lactone from the phase containing the acid. The starting mixture may be obtained by reacting a C 1 -C 4 alkyl or benzyl ester of trans-#-hydroxy dihydrochrysanthemic acid with more than an equimolar amount of an alkali metal or an alkali metal alkoxide, hydride or amide at 100-200‹ C. The esters may be obtained by hydrolysing a trans-#-halogenodihydrochrysanthemic acid or an ester thereof and subsequently esterifying if required.
