[Also in Group V] A method of sealing an interruption in a thermoplastic covering of a cable includes the steps of placing a thermoplastic patch in contact with the covering at the region of interruption, placing the assembly in a mould and heating that portion of the mould in contact with the patch in order to fuse the patch and covering- together. As shown, a U-shaped mould 5 of asbestos compound has, incorporated in it and flush with the moulding surface, a heating element 6 which may be a strip if the interruption to be sealed is longitudinal. Alternatively (Fig. 3, not shown) a cartridge heater 22 inside a metal sleeve 19 probed through the mould may be used if the interruption is a hole in the covering, the hole being plugged with a similar material as the covering before patching it up. The cable 9 placed in the mould with the patch 15 facing the heating element 6, is kept under pressure by spring clamp 10.
