Abstract
1294510 Moulding grommets SHRINK TUBE & PLASTIC Ltd 3 June 1971 [8 June 1970] 27604/70 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions F2 and H2] A grommet for locating a cable, wire, pipe, or pin passing through a hole 9 in a panel 10 comprises a tubular portion 1 for location in the hole with a shoulder 4 abutting one side of the panel the tubular portion being deformable when heated to produce a second shoulder which abuts the other side of the panel, and a sleeve portion 5 integral with the tubular portion 1 having a bore 6 which is contracted by heating to grip the cable, wire, pipe, or pin 11. The grommet is formed in the shape shown in Fig. 2 by dip moulding or injection moulding, from a material which can be reformed by heating to a second shape, which is maintained after cooling, and is self-deformable by further heating to return to its first shape. Plastics such as cross-linked or normal P.V.C., cross-linked polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene either cross-linked or not, neoprene, ethylene propylene rubber, silicone, and fluorinated silicone are suitable. After moulding, the grommet is reformed by heating in a moulding tool to the shape shown in Fig. 1. On installation, the grommet is heated, and returns to the Fig. 2 shape. The sleeve portion 5 may be internally coated with a hot melt adhesive which bonds to the cable 11 at installation. A silicone rubber sleeve or band may be placed around the tubular portion 1 so that on installation it is pressed against the panel for sealing. The tubular portion may have an internal annular groove 7 which houses an expansible coil spring 8 to assist in forming the second shoulder on heating during installation. In this case a rigid collar is placed round the tubular member at the plane of the spring 8 after the reforming, to prevent expansion during storage.
