Abstract
928,589. Smokers' lighters. HOWARD WALL Ltd. May 9, 1960 [Feb. 10, 1959 ; Aug. 31, 1959], Nos. 4652/59 and 29664/59. Class 75 (3). The fuel chamber 20, Fig. 2, of a smoker's lighter is filled with liquefied gas from a refill unit 1, Fig. 1, by inserting a tubular nozzle 13 on the unit into a tubular portion 22 on the lighter and thereby causing a tube 17 mounted on a spring-urged member 15 in the nozzle 13 to pierce a self-sealing washer 7 closing the refill unit and also to pierce a self-sealing washer 26 sealing an inlet to the fuel chamber. The tube 17 then conveys the liquefied gas to the lighter. The self-sealing washers 7, 26 are rubber cylinders and are mounted between two annular surfaces. The sealed inlet to the fuel chamber is formed at the end of a tube 24 screwed into the tubular portion 22 of the lighter. A vent 27 in the tubular portion 22 is normally closed by a spring-urged resilient washer 28 having a tapered inner surface engaging a corresponding surface on the tube 24. The vent is opened during filling by the nozzle 13 of the refill unit. Also if the pressure in the fuel chamber becomes excessive the washer 28 deforms to open the vent. In another construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the vent is formed in an inwardly bulged part of the tubular portion 22 and the resilient washer closing the vent is cylindrical. An annular stop limits the upward movement of the washer. In still another construction the vent is closed by a spring-biased pin which projects into the path of the nozzle of the refill unit. In another embodiment of the invention, Figs. 1,2 (not shown), accompanying the first Provisional Specification, the fuel chamber of the lighter is closed by a spring-urged valve and the refill unit has a sealed nozzle. An end of an adaptor is screwed or push-fitted on to the sealed nozzle and the other end of the adaptor is then screwed or push-fitted into a tubular housing for the spring-urged valve of the lighter. A tubular pin is slidably mounted in the adaptor. One end of the pin pierces the nozzle of the refill unit the other end engages packing on a tubular and thrust member of the lighter valve and opens the valve. Specification 887,471 is referred to.
