A paint brush comprises a handle for releasably holding thin flat brush elements in bunched together relationship. Each brush element 5 comprises a layer of bristles 6 bound together at their roots by bonding material, the bonded roots being housed in an end member 7. The member 7 comprises a metal strip folded along its centre and receiving within the fold the bonded roots of the layer of bristles. In a modification the end members are of synthetic resin moulded on to the bonded roots of the layers of bristles. The handle 2, Fig. 1, has a rectangular housing 1 into which the end members 7 are inserted and held by a screw 4 which is passed through a threaded hole 3 in the wall of the housing. In a modification, Fig. 3, a flat plate 8 having one or more screw-threaded apertures, extends into the handle. Screw locking heads 10 concentric with the apertures are secured to the plate 8. The brush elements 5 are formed with apertures that correspond with those in the plate 8. Screws 11 are passed through washers 12 and then through the apertures in the bristle layers and through the apertures 9. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the flat plate is secured to one side face of the handle 2 or the plate may be integral with the handle.
