Abstract

927,703. Packaging; collapsible tubes. V. FLAX. March 10, 1960, No. 8472/60. Classes 66 and 94(1). [Also in Group XI] A tube 1, Fig. 1, of flexible heat sealable material has outlet nozzles 2 secured to the outer surface of its wall at intervals along its length. The tube is filled and divided into separate compartments 4, Fig. 2, by transverse welds 3 that may be formed such that these welds lie close to the nozzles 2 and in the plain containing the axes of the nozzles. The tube 1 may be extruded or comprise one or more strips or material united to form a tube, and the nozzles 2 may be of thermoplastic material secured to the tube by welding or adhesive. The resulting packages are separated by cutting along the welds 3. The wall of the tube may close the nozzle to act as a seal. Securing nozzles to tube. A flat plate 9 of electrically conductive material, Fig. 6, is inserted in the tube 1 where it passes between upper and lower high frequency welding electrodes 15, 13. The upper electrode 15 is movable and surrounds a cylinder 16 of insulating material receiving a nozzle 2 to be secured to the tube 1. A disc 17 of insulating material covers the lower face of the electrode 15. In operation, the tube 1 is intermittently advanced and the welding electrodes 15 13 closed to secure the nozzles 2 to the tube 1, the plate 9 holding the walls of the tube 1 apart and acting as an intermediate electrode. Movement of the plate 9 is prevented by means of an enlarged end 11, at its trailing or leading end, associated with a restricted opening. As shown rollers 12 constitute the restricted opening. Alternatively, Fig. 8, the enlarged end 21 may be connected to the plate 9 by a flexible member 22 such that the weight of the end 21 prevents movement of the plate 9. The plate 9 may include an upstanding pin at the point where the nozzle 2 is to be applied so as to perforate the tube 1. The tube may be of laminated construction.
