Abstract

927,626. Hypodermic syringes. BRUNSWICK CORPORATION. Oct. 26, 1960 [Oct. 28, 1959], No. 36719/60. Class 81 (2). A hypodermic needle hub and sheath structure comprises a hub 11 shaped to engage the outlet of a hypodermic syringe and having a passage for retaining a needle, and a needle sheath 21 forming a unitary structural extension of the hub and severable therefrom. A hypodermic needle 12 has a ring 13 or enlargement by which it is firmly fixed in a hub 11 which is shaped for fitting over or within the discharge outlet of a hypodermic syringe and may have a cap 28. The needle sheath 21 which is spaced from or contiguous with the needle may be severed from the hub at a thin portion 19 by rotation relative to the hub about its longitudinal axis, to expose the needle for use. Ribs 17, 26 on the hub and needle sheath facilitate manipulation. The hub may have an integral sleeve portion (Fig. 11, not shown) for receiving an ampoule, and an external screw thread for securing in a syringe. A double-ended needle 115 (Fig. 12) may be contained in the hub and sheath assembly and an ampoule 111 having a pierceable stopper 113 may be arranged against the hub so that the needle pierces the stopper, a band 117 being crimped over the needle hub and the ampoule neck to secure the assembly for reception in a conventional syringe barrel 110.
