Abstract

Porous material is manufactured from one or more sheets having metal portions overlying one another by subjecting the sheet or sheets to a cleaning operation, the subjecting the sheet or sheets to pressure so that the overlying portions firmly contact one another, sintering the overlying portions together while under pressure, and finally annealing the sintered material at a lower temperature while maintaining it flat. A rolling process may precede and/or follow the sintering step. When sheets of perforated or expanded metal are used, they may be so arranged that the holes are partially out of register with those of an adjacent sheet; when sheets of superimposed wire gauze are employed (preferably having a hollander weave) the warp and weft strands of one sheet are arranged to be at an angle to those of an adjacent sheet. A reduction in pore size may be brought about by the rolling operation. The sintering operation may be facilitated by etching or crimping the metal at the points of contact.
