Abstract

A filter element comprises a sintered mass of powdered metal, having such a high degree of porosity that it has insufficient strength to be used by itself, in association with perforated metal sheet, the perforations therein having been reduced in size by rolling. The rolled perforated metal sheets may form a container for or at least partially surround the sintered mass, or a rolled perforated metal sheet may be located within the body of the sintered mass. Alternatively the sintered mass may be contained in the rolled perforated metal sheet and at the same time other strengthening metal, preferably in sheet form, may be located within the body of the sintered mass. The strengthening metal may be rolled or unrolled perforated sheets expanded metal or wire gauze or cloth. The metal powders or the complete article may be given a surface diffusion treatment with chromium or other metals. In one method a mass of powdered metal is placed in a shaped hollow structure formed from rolled perforated metal sheet and is compacted without substantial distortion of the hollow structure. The whole is then inserted into a furnace to effect sintering of the powdered metal mass. In an alternative method powdered metal is put into a hollow supporting structure, a strengthening member of rolled perforated metal sheet is disposed on the surface of the powdered metal and covered with more powdered metal, the mass is compacted without substantial distortion of the strengthening member and the whole is then inserted into a furnace; after sintering the sintered mass is removed from the supporting structure.
