Abstract

A thin film of a non-adhesive organic polymeric electrical insulating material is made by coating a solution of the material on a surface of a flexible support on to which a thin coating of a high molecular weight organic polymeric adhesive has previously been deposited, and the dried coating subsequently removed from the support. Specified insulating materials include cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, benzyl cellulose, polystyrene, polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene and polyethylene terephthalate, which are cast from solution in volatile organic p solvents, e.g. cellulose acetate from acetone. The adhesive should be thermally stable, have a low vapour pressure, and dielectric properties similar to those of the insulating material. A suitable adhesive comprises at least one polymerized hydrocarbon or polymerized vinyl ether or a mixture thereof, e.g. polyisobutylene or polybutylene having a molecular weight of approximately 5,000, or polyvinylisobutyl ether. Desirably, the flexible support is first coated with a non-adhesive hydrocarbon having a melting point of at least 60 DEG C., on to which the adhesive is deposited. The hard wax formed in the Fischer-Tropsch process, consisting of high molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbons, partly branched, and melting at 105 DEG -110 DEG C., may be utilised as a non-adhesive hydrocarbon. Films so made are desirably not more than 6m thick, and may be metallized, e.g. with aluminium, by vapour-deposition under vacuum, for use as capacitor dielectrics. In an example, a flexible support of paper or synthetic plastic material is impregnated or coated with the hard wax mentioned previously, and is then further coated with a benzene solution of polyisobutylene of molecular weight 5,000. The adhesive layer is dried and the treated support is then coated with a solution of cellulose acetate in a volatile solvent, and the support heated to evaporate the solvent. Metallization of the film may be effected before removal of the film from the support.
