873,205. Dielectric films. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1958 [Feb. 14, 1957], No. 5063/57. Class 140. A polyester carrier foil, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate foil, having a thin dielectric film coating, is produced by casting a solution of a material comprising polystyrene or a polystyrene derivative on to the carrier foil. The dielectric film material, e.g. a copolymer of styrene and α-methylstyrene, polychlorostyrene, polydichlorostyrene, polymethylstyrene (polyvinyl toluene), polydimethylstyrene or poly-α-methylstyrene, may be cast as a solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon, a chlorinated solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, a mixture of an aromatic hydrocarbon and a chlorinated solvent, or a mixture of an aromatic hydrocarbon, and between 1 and 5% dioxane. The coated film may be produced continuously and the dielectric film may be heated and subsequently metallized, e.g. with aluminium, by vacuum metallization. The carrier film may take the form of a strip, the edges of which may be trimmed after formation of the dielectric film or after the metallization of the dielectric film. The metallized dielectric film may be stripped from the carrier film.
