Abstract

Thin films of insulating material, in particular films having a thickness of less than 6m , are made by impregnating a backing with a hydrocarbon having a high melting-point, i.e. of at least 100 DEG C., depositing a film-forming material upon the impregnated backing and subsequently stripping the film from the backing. The hydrocarbon may be hard wax or polyethylene and the backing may be paper having a thickness of about 10 m . Suitable film-forming materials are cellulose derivatives and synthetic hydrocarbons and monomeric film-forming materials, e.g. monovinylcarbazole, styrene and epoxy resins, which polymerize during the drying of the film.
