Abstract
926,845. Cathode materials and processing. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 21, 1961, No. 10257/61. Class 39 (1). An indirectly heated cathode for electrondischarge devices, e.g. cathode-ray tubes and thermionic valves, comprises a heater element and a body, for example a sleeve, having one side thereof exposed to said heater element and consisting of a material containing nickel as a main component, said body having on at least said one side an alloyed layer of nickel and a material selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum and base alloys thereof, said layer being a surface layer formed in situ by resolidification upon said body from the liquid alloy phase. In a preferred embodiment, the nickel sleeve 61 has a layer 80, 81 containing from 60% to 90% nickel and 10% to 40% molybdenum and of a thickness not exceeding 2 mils, the concentration of molybdenum decreasing from the surface inwards. In a method of preparation, a slurry containing 3 parts by weight of acetone, 4 parts of molybdic acid anhydride (MoO 3 ) and 3 parts of a 10% solution of nitrocellulose in toluene was placed as a layer 1 mil. thick on a thin nickel sheet, and heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen and nitrogen at a temperature of 1400‹ C. for approximately 1 min. until the surface has a bright shiny appearance.
