Abstract
926,485. Electrolyte water-softening. C. MARZARI. Feb. 23, 1960 [Feb. 25, 1959], No. 6387/60. Class 41. Hard water is treated to prevent its forming scale in boiler tubes, and to cause the deposit of dissolved salts as sludge when the water is heated, by subjecting it to an alternating electric voltage of from 110 to 280 volts at a frequency of 50-100 cycles per second through electrically insulating material having a macromolecular structure. As shown, apparatus comprises two plates 1, 2 each having a first recess forming an inlet chamber, a greater second recess and a third recess, the same size as the first forming an outlet chamber, a thin metal sheet 7 coated with a macromolecular dielectric 8 being provided in the chamber formed by the two central recesses; the recesses are connected by passageways in gaskets 5, 6. The macromolecular material may be polystyrene and the alternating voltage is applied between the metal sheet 7 and the plates 1, 2.
