Abstract
<PICT:0842104/IV(a)/1> To improve the printability of one or both surfaces of polyethylene film, the film is subjected to a corona discharge between electrodes supplied with alternating potential and having a capacitor effectively in series with the electrodes and the source of electricity; the inclusion of the capacitor reduces the variation of current between different areas of the electrodes so that a more nearly uniform treatment of the film is obtained when large areas of film are treated. As shown, polyethylene film 11 is guided onto a rotating drum 13 covered with a layer of dielectric material 14 to prevent arc-over and provided with a slip ring and brush 16 for electrical contact. A stator 17 and the drum are connected to an alternating potential source 18 and a capacitor 22 is connected in series with the drum. The electrodes may comprise a pair of parallel plates and the capacitor may be in series with the primary winding of a step-up transformer, the secondary of which provides the potential to the electrodes. The film undergoing treatment may have a width of several feet and the area being treated at any instant be several square feet. Specification 715,914 is referred to.
