Abstract

657,392. Preventing corrosion. HAJOSI, C. A. Feb. 22, 1949, No. 4786. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1949. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 25, 1949]. Drawings to Specification. [Class 123(i)] An electric method of preventing and removing scale comprises applying a periodically varying potential across the wall of the vessel to be protected and an element, e.g. an insulated electrode, in electrical contact with the liquid in the vessel. During the intervals separating two peak values the potential is lower than the counter e.m.f. of the cell (formed by the vessel, the liquid, and the electrode), and the wall of the vessel is always negative with respect to the electrode,' except when the potential difference equals zero. Three circuits are described as suitable for producing appropriate wave forms, viz:- (a) a rectifier circuit, (b) a relaxation oscillator using a neon tube, and (c) a frequency modulation circuit, the potential to the vessel and electrode being taken out of the anode circuit of the valve. In this third circuit the frequency of the pulses varies cyclically, it being constant in the other two. In the last two cases the pulsating voltage may be superimposed on a steady voltage, and should always preferably be rich in harmonics.
