Class 23 [Also in Group XIII] In a centrifugal separator, Fig. 3, a mixture of steam and water is whirled by vanes 46 as it passes from the upper end of a vertical inlet conduit 36 into an open-ended whirl chamber 38 which converges upwards so that the separated water is prevented from overflowing its upper edge and flows through an annular passage 40 into a surrounding open-ended tubular baffle 42 where any steam still present in the water is separated and leaves upwardly through an annular passage 44 while the water is evacuated downwardly. A further set of vanes 48 is provided at the outlet of the passage 40 to project the water substantially horizontally against the wall of the baffle to facilitate separation of the entrained steam. A number of separators may be mounted on a cup-shaped baffle 24 in a vertical boiler, Fig. 1, in which water circulates outside U-tubes 12 carrying the heating fluid. The mixture of steam and water produced within the baffle passes through the separators from which the steam flows towards a drier 32 and out through the boiler shell 10. The water evacuated from the separators is returned, with the feed water entering at 22, through an annular passage 26 into the lower open end of the baffle 24.
