Abstract

988,337. Centrifugal separators. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Dec. 19, 1962 [Jan. 4, 1962], No. 47886/62. Heading B2P. [Also in Division F4] A steam separator 30 for removing water and solid impurities from a steam and water mixture comprises an inlet 31, Fig. 3, associated with swirl producing means 36 and communicating with an elongated separator tube 32, e.g. of frusto-conical shape, openings 47 being provided at the juncture of the inlet and the separator tube to remove a portion of the heavier components of the mixture prior to its passage through the tube. A number of such separators are supported in a steam generator drum 11, Fig. 2, on members 22, 23 which define a compartment 20 for the reception of the steam-water mixture from the generator tubes 17. The compartment 20 communicates with the drum interior through perforations 27. The inlet 31 is supported above the water level 29 by an annular bracket 34 secured to the lower surface of the member 23 above which the tube 32 is spaced by washers 46 to form the openings 47 for the passage of the heavier components into the interior of the drum. The swirl means 36 consist of spaced vanes arranged tangentially with respect to the central aperture 35 in the bracket 34. The upper end of the tube 32 is received within a channel member 33 which defines an annular opening 44 for the removal of water separated in the tube 32 and an outlet 45 for the purified steam. The separated water is returned to the water in the lower part of the drum while the purified steam is finally dried by its passage through a screen baffle 48 and a screen drier 19 before leaving the generator drum at 13. In a modification, Fig. 5, the separator tube 54 is cylindrical and is provided with an annular inlet 51 having swirl producing sinuous members 52 and with circumferentially spaced openings 55 for the preliminary removal of the heavier mixture components.
