Abstract

The invention comprises quaternary hydrazinium compounds having a cation of the formula: <FORM:0926249/IV(a)/1> wherein X represents a halogen, and R2 and R3 are the same or different and each represent a methyl or ethyl group, or together R2 and R3 represent a tetramethylene group, and the preparation thereof by treating a tertiary amine of the formula R4R5R6N with a compound of the formula R7Q, wherein R4, R5, R6 and R7 are each as appropriate and not necessarily respectively an o-halobenzyl, an R2, and R3, and an amino group, and Q represents a halogen atom or a reactive ester group, such as a sulphonic acid ester group -OSO2Y1, wherein Y1 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group such as a p-tolyl group, which forms the anion of the quaternary hydrazinium salt. Thus the above process may be carried out by reacting a 1,1-disubstituted-hydrazine of the formula R2R3N.NH2 with an o-halobenzyl compound of the formula o-X-C6H4.CH2Q wherein R2, R3, X and Q have the above significance, by reacting a tertiary o-halobenzylamine of the formula o-X-C6H4.CH2NR2R3 with an amino compound of the formula NH2Q, wherein R2, R3, X and Q have the above significance; and by reacting a tertiary o-halobenzylhydrazine of the formula o-X-C6H4.CH2NR2NH2 with a compound of the formula R3Q, wherein R2 and R3 are the same or different and are each methyl or ethyl groups, and X and Q have the above significance. Therapeutic compositions useful in the treatment of hypertension contain as the active ingredient a hydrazinium compound having a cation of the above general formula and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Thus the composition may be in a form of a draft, in a form suitable for oral administration, in a form for parenteral administration, or in the form of a suppository.
