Abstract
925,731. Typewriters &c. CREED & CO. Ltd. Nov. 17, 1961 [Nov. 19, 1960], No. 41253/61. Class 100 (4). A line-at-a-time printer wherein a line of characters is formed by selectively printing a number of lines of marks, means are provided for urging all the printing elements 1 towards an impression surface and further means for holding back selected elements. As shown, the elements 1 are pivoted on common shaft 2, and energization of a magnet 5 tends to move them all to printing position. The upper end of each element has a part 8 inserted with small clearance in the gap between two foils 9 of insulating material. Conductive foils 10 are situated between the foils 9 and other insulating foils 11. The pair of foils 10 is electrically connected to a metal block 12 with a terminal 13, the terminals of the various blocks being staggered as shown. In operation, a switching wheel connected to the paper-feed shaft causes energization alternately of the magnet 5 and a resetting magnet 6. The foils 10 of elements 1 which are not required to print, are energized, and the electrostatic force set up holds those elements back when the magnet 5 is energized. Instead of foils 10, there could be metal coatings on the foils 9. Also, the electrostatic device may comprise stampings suitably coated with insulating lacquer. In a modified construction, Fig. 4 (not shown), the part 8 performs a lateral movement instead of an endwise movement.
