Abstract

786.027. Typewriters. DIRKS, G. June 23. 1950 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 37206/54. Divided out of 786,021 [Group XIX]. Class 100(4) A printing arrangement comprises an assembly of side-by-side printing levers each having a printing surface near one end, means imparting a reciprocating movement to an intermediate part of each lever, and means restraining the ends of the levers selectively from movement so that a printing operation is performed or not according to which end of a lever is restrained. A bar 14 passes through and imparts up and down movement to an assembly of printing levers 13, only one of which is shown. The right hand end of the lever is normally held by a permanent magnet 17 which is stronger than a second permanent magnet 21, and as the bar 14 moves downwardly a printing action is performed by a nipple 20 acting through dry ink ribbon (not shown). The characters are built up from patterns of dots made line-by-line by nipples 20. If, when a bar 14 is in the uppermost position, a pulse is supplied to a winding 19 on the leg of the magnet 17 with which the lever 13 is engaged, the electromagnetism being arranged to oppose the permanent magnetism in the leg, then the right hand end of the lever is released and the opposite end is retained by the magnet 21 during the following downward movement of the lever so that no printing action occurs. These inhibiting pulses may be supplied from a CRT distributer at the output of an electronic computer. Alternatively the pulses may be arranged to initiate printing instead of inhibiting it. Between printing actions, the paper is fed step-by-step under a side-byside arrangement of levers 13 sufficient to produce one or a complete row of characters simultaneously. The bar 14 may be actuated by electromagnetic or cam means. Springs may be used instead of the permanent magnets 17 and 21 and mechanical control may be substituted for the electromagnetic selection of the printing levers.
