In a printer of the kind in which a hammer is operated at the correct instant to cause printing from types on a continuously rotating type roll, the hammers are arranged in groups of two or more, the corresponding driving coils e.g. S<SP>1</SP>-1 and S<SP>1</SP>-67 being connected to common driving circuits 4D-1. In the form of Fig. 1 one of each group of two is in the left-hand set H1-H66 and the other is in the right-hand set H67- H132. The driving coils of the left-hand set are connected to line B-1 and those of the righthand set line B-2. These are energized alternately as each line of characters passes through the printing position, by switches SCR-1 and SCR-2 controlled by timing pulses. The characters in the right-hand section PR<SP>1</SP>-2 of the roll are displaced relative to those in the left-hand section PR<SP>1</SP>-1 so as to be later at the printing line PP. For each character, printing first takes place in the left-hand half, switch SCR-1 being operated by a pulse P-1, and the character is then printed in the right-hand half, switch SCR-2 then being energized by pulse P-2. The character selection pulses are applied to inputs CS-1, C2-2 &c. There may be more than two displaced sets of characters, the drivers then being connected in sets of more than two, enabled in succession. Instead of being arranged in two large groups each occupying half the print roll, the two relatively displaced sets of characters may be interspersed in twos (Fig. 2A, not shown) so that the first and third hammers are paired and the second and fourth and so on.
