786,024. Selective printing. DIRKS, G. June 23, 1950 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 37203/54. Divided out of 786,021 [Group XIX]. Class 100(4) A printing body has a plurality of printing faces or elements in fixed relationship with each other and each adapted to print a part only of a character and means whereby a relative movement between the body and the paper causes successive elements to be brought serially into side-byside printing positions within the same letter space so as to build up a selected character. A bar 1 carries a diagonallyarranged row of studs or nipples 3 separated from each other by a distamce greater than the height of a character, Fig. 3, to be printed. As the bar 1 is advanced over the ink ribbon 8 and paper 7 it is pressed into printing contact e.g. under control of magnetic recordings, for various periods of time. Thus the element 9 of a character is the result of a comparatively long period of contact by the first nipple, elements 10, 11 and 12 are formed by three brief contacts by the second to sixth nipples in succession and the element 13 is formed by the seventh nipple. Multi-column printing could be performed by a number of bars operating side by side, or a single plate carrying side-by-side sets of nipples may co-operate with means for providing a selective movement of the paper towards the plate for those columns in which printing is to be effected.
