Abstract
925,685. Automatic light-switching systems for vehicles. A. R. AUGE, and I. R. SANROMA. March 3, 1960 [March 4, 1959; Nov. 25, 1959], No. 7585/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (3). In an automatic light switching system for vehicles each vehicle is provided with a transmitter and receiver so that upon a first vehicle receiving non-visible radiation transmitted by a second vehicle the headlights of the first vehicle are switched to the dip position. The transmitted radiation is preferably infra-red or ultraviolet, and may be continuous or pulsed. The radiation is confined forwardly of the vehicle over an angle which is greater than that over which there is danger of dazzle from an approaching vehicle, and the receiver receives radiation over a somewhat smaller angle than that of the transmitted radiation. In order to dip the lights of a following vehicle, each vehicle may have a second radiator which radiates rearwardly over a small angle. The receiver may comprise a silicon cell and the transmitter has an optical system including filters to absorb visible radiation. In fog the lights may be permanently dipped-in this case a visible or audible indication of an approaching vehicle is given.
