957,086. Light directing elements. SOC. D'EXPLOITATIONS INDUSTRIELLES MECANIQUES ET AUTOMOBILES, S.E.I.M.A. Oct. 26, 1901 [Oct. 27, 1960; Jan. 4, 1961], No. 38321/61. Heading F4R. A transparent element for controlling the direction of light beams, for example the rear lights or flashing indicators of a vehicle, has the central part in the form of a slightly convex lens and an annular part striations on the surface facing the light source, so as to concentrate the light in the central part along the horizontal and vertical axes to warn the driver of a following vehicle that the vehicle is about to stop or turn and to produce a beam of parallel rays from the annular part to be visible at a distance. The central part may be circular with horizontal and vertical extensions or may be in the form of a cross having the horizontal part longer than the vertical. Fig. 1 shows one form of element having a plano-convex central lens 1 and an annular part having corrugations. Figs. 3a and 3b show the redirection of the light by reflection and refraction respectively at the surface of the corrugations 2.
