Abstract

Synthetic resin compositions are prepared by a method which comprises compounding a thermoplastic, tactic polymer of a compound having a vinyl, acrylyl or methacrylyl group, with a lesser amount of a curable copolymer of a monomer containing a vinyl, acrylyl or methacrylyl group and only one polymerizable ethylenic double bond and no more than an equal amount of a monomer containing a vinyl, acrylyl or methacrylyl group and two polymerizable double bonds. Compounding may be effected by milling the tactic polymer on heated rollers, optionally together with a plasticizer, e.g. aliphatic and aromatic esters, ketones and amides, and thereafter adding to the plastic tactic polymer the curable copolymer to give a transparent or translucent sheet which may subsequently be disintegrated into chips or flakes. Additional plasticizers, stabilizers, fillers and pigments may be incorporated and the compositions subsequently moulded and cured. They may be cast into films, spun into fibres, coated on metals, glass, wood and cardboard or used to impregnate fabrics, paper or leather. The tactic polymers may be prepared by the method of Specification 900,973. Examples described the compounding of (1) isotactic polymethyl methacrylate, dipropyl ketone and a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and glycol dimethacrylate; and (2) crystalline poly-t-butyl acrylate, dibutyl adipate and a copolymer of butyl methacrylate and allyl acrylate.
