Abstract

Trioxane is polymerized in the presence of a comonomer containing more than one polymerizable function to give a cross-linked oxymethylene polymer. Specified comonomers are vinyl cyclohexane dioxide and dicyclopentadiene dioxide, 3-4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexylmethyl - 3 - 4 - epoxy - 6 - methyl - cyclohexanecarboxylate, epoxy resins made by the reaction of epichlorohydrin and a bisphenol, diketals and diacetals of pentaerythritol; dioxetanes, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinyl caprolactam. The polymerization is preferably carried out in the presence of boron fluoride or a boron fluoride-containing compound. The polymer may be produced in the form of a filament or film by shaping a mixture of trioxane, the comonomer and a resinous binder into a filament or film and polymerizing. Suitable resinous binders are polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethyl acrylate, polyvinyl caprolactam, polyamides, polyesters, cellulose acetate and ethyl cellulose used in an amount from 5 to 50% of the trioxane. The mixture may be melt spun or wet spun. Specification 1,010,712 is referred to.
