Abstract

Trioxane and a compound containing at least one epoxy group and three or more carbon atoms are polymerized, an aldehyde having at least two carbon atoms being mixed with the comonomers before copolymerization commences. Preferred aldehydes are acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde-a long list is given of aldehydes and epoxy compounds. A preferred epoxy compound is vinyl cyclohexene dioxide. A third comonomer, e.g. ethylene oxide or dioxolane may be present. The copolymers preferably contain at least 95% oxymethylene groups. The usual catalysts may be used, the preferred catalysts being cationic, e.g. boron fluoride and boron fluoride complexes. The copolymerization preferably takes place in the liquid state using molten trioxane, batchwise or continuously.
