[Also in Groups XXX and XXXVI] In a system for sensing the magnitude of a load on a haulage plant, a haulage rope is made of magnetostrictive material and is electromagnetically coupled to a sensing circuit which produces a signal corresponding to the load magnitude. The rope may form the core of a magnetic amplifier having a polarizing winding energized with direct current to produce an assymetrical B-H curve. Stress variations in the rope then cause flux variations which generate a control signal in an output winding connected to an alternating current source. Such signals from two amplifiers associated with two rope sections can be combined to produce a resultant signal.
