Abstract

2-Chloro-5-b - acetoxyethylsulphonyl-aniline may be prepared by reacting 7-chloro-2-nitro-4-b -hydroxyethysulphonylbenzene with acetic anhydride in pyridine and reducing the 1-chloro-2-nitro-4-b -acetoxyethylsulphonylbenzene with hydrogen in the presence of Raney nickel.ALSO:The invention comprises water-soluble dyes containing at least one sulphonic or carboxylic acid group and attached to a carbon atom of the dye a group of formula:- <FORM:0924990/IV(a)/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl, cyclohexyl or benzyl radical, R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, n is 1 or 2 and -COY is the residue of a monobasic carboxylic acid. The dyes may be prepared from intermediates containing a group of the above formula or such a group may be introduced into the dyestuff molecule. Specified dyes are those of the azo, metallized azo, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine and nitro series. The dyes may be used to colour cellulose and nitrogenous fibres and under suitable conditions are believed to react with the fibre. In examples: (1) 2-chloro-5-b -acetoxyethylsulphonylaniline is diazotized and coupled with 2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid; (2) 1-amino-4-(31-b -hydroxy-ethylsulphonylanilino) anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid is acylated with benzoyl chloride in pyridine; (3) copper phthalocyanine is treated with chlorosulphonic acid and the resultant sulphochloride condensed with m-aminobenzene-b -acetoxyethyl sulphone.
