Abstract

The viscosity of natural clays is improved by ion exchange of the calcium or magnesium ions of the clay with sodium ions, usually by sodium carbonate in solution, and simultaneously adding 0,25 to 3% by weight of magnesium oxide powder. The process may be effected by first humidifying the natural clay for example, hextonite with 10 to 20% water and then adding the magnesium oxide and sodium carbonate, after which the resulting mixture is pressed and dried. The resulting clay may be used for, drilling sludges, sealing and as an agglomerant of foundry sands.
