[Also in Groups XXIII and XXIV] A grinding-wheel spindle 2 has dynamic balancing means comprising a bearing 5, adjacent the wheel, carried by semi-cylindrical members 8 capable of being adjusted so as to hold the bearing rigidly or, as shown in Fig. 3, resiliently, so that during rotation the spindle may oscillate at a frequency less than its rotational frequency, and a liquid-filled chamber 17, rotatable with and substantially symmetrical about the axis of the spindle, containing a float 18 controlled by means 20, 24, for holding or releasing it. The members 8 are movable radially from a released to a clamping position by an axially adjustable ring 10 having a conical inner face which engages the tapered outer faces 8a of the members 8 as a disc 14 having a cam-face is rotated by a lever 15. The float 18 is secured in its balancing position during " free" running of the spindle by a spring-loaded piston 20 which is held out of engagement, until the float has assumed its new position, by an hydraulically operated piston 24. The bearing clamping means is operated to hold bearing 5 rigidly after the float 18 has been secured. Mercury may be used in the float chamber.
