Abstract

A coating composition comprises gelatin and from 0.01 to 2%, based on the weight of gelatine, of a compound of Formula I: <FORM:0924320/IV(a)/1> wherein R is an alkyl group containing 8 to 12 carbon atoms, M is alkali metal or an ammonium group, and n has a value from 1 to 10. R may be either a branched or a straight chain alkyl group. M includes substituted ammonium groups in which one or more substituents is a short chain alkyl or hydroxylalkyl group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. CH3, C2H5 or hydroxyethyl. The compound may be sodium p-t-octyl phenoxy polyether sulphate. The composition may also contain another coating acid, e.g. sodium maleopimarate, in an amount by weight 4 to 19 times that of the compound of Formula 1. The compound of Formula I may constitute at least 10% of the total weight of coating acid, which total weight may be 0.5 grams per pound of the composition when in the form of a photographic gelatin silver halide emulsion.
