Abstract

Porous refractory shapes are made by impregnating a sponge of a material which leaves substantially no residue on heating and of the intercommunicating cell type with a suspension or dispersion of refractory particles in a liquid, and heating the impregnated sponge to remove the liquid and material of the sponge and sinter the refractory particles together. Refractory clays, minerals, oxides, borides, carbides, silicides and nitrides are specified; in the examples are used alumina, beryllia and china clay. The sponge may be polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, latex or polyurethane. A number of impregnated sponges may be combined before drying and firing. A fired shape may be subsequently impregnated and refired.
