Abstract
A method of making a porous ceramic article comprises soaking a piece of resilient cellular material in a suitable slip, squeezing the piece of material to remove the excess slip, allowing the slip to dry and then firing the material so that the slip forms a ceramic block and the cellular material is burnt away. The article may be soaked in fuel and used as an ignition device, eg. for barbecues, or it may be used as a water storage block/filter in plant containers, or as an air moisturiser.
Description
PRODUCTION METHOD
This invention relates to a method of producing a porous ceramic article and to an article produced by the method, and has for its object to provide such a method in a simple and convenient form.
According to the invention a method of producing a porous ceramic article comprises selecting a piece of resilient cellular material, immersing the piece of material in a ceramic slip so that the slip flows into the interstices of the material, squeezing the piece of material to remove excess slip, allowing the piece of material to dry out and then firing the piece of material at a temperature which is sufficient to cause formation of the porous ceramic article and the burning away of the cellular material.
The porous ceramic article produced by the aforesaid method has a number of uses for example, it is particularly useful as an ignition device for barbecues and the like, the article being soaked in fuel such as methylated spirit, prior to use. It may also be used as a water storage block/filter for use in hanging baskets, plant troughs and the like. It can also be used as an air moisturiser.
The resulting article has the shape of the original piece of cellular material and this is therefore chosen with the required shape and dimensions of the article in mind. The constituents of the ceramic slip can be varied so that the article may be produced as fine bone china, parian, porcelain, semi-porcelain, earthenware, fine brick cement or stoneware.
When used for the aforesaid purposes the porous ceramic blocks are utilised as follows:1. As an ignition block/firelighter the article is
saturated with barbecue lighting fluid/methylated
spirits prior to being placed amongst the
charcoal, coal or logs. It is then set alight
with a match and will burn for a sufficient period
of time to ignite the barbecue/fire. It is re
usable and eliminates the danger of flareback.
2. As a water storage block/filter the article is
saturated with water and placed on a layer of
potting compost/peat within the plant container
about one third of the way up the container. The
container is then filled to the top with more
potting compost/peat and planted. The container
should be watered in the normal way but the
frequency of watering is reduced as a consequence
of the storage qualities of the ceramic block
which allows water to filter out and moisten the
soil around it. The porous ceramic block is re
usable.
3. As an air moisturiser/humidifier the article is
placed in a suitable container and saturated with
water. It will retain the water for a
considerable period of time and can be re-used.
As an example a slip mixture was produced using approximately 100 kilograms of fine bone china clay, 14 litres of water and 0.3 litres of sodium silicate, the fine bone china clay being a mixture comprising calcined bone, cornish stone, china clay and ball clay in approximate quantities of 47.0%, 27.0%, 22.7% and 2.7% respectively.
A natural or a synthetic sponge can form the cellular material and in the case of the synthetic sponge it must be an open pore sponge to allow the slip material to coat the walls of the interstices thereof.
In carrying out the method the sponge is squeezed and immersed in the slip so that the slip flows into the interstices when it is released. This process is repeated a number of times whilst it is in the slip until it is thoroughly saturated. The sponge is then removed from the slip and thoroughly squeezed again to remove the excess slip. This leaves a coating of slip on the walls of the interstices.
If desired prior to immersing the sponge in the slip the surfaces of the sponge which form the interstices may be "wetted" by immersing the sponge in water.
The sponge is then allowed to dry after which it is fired in a kiln at a temperature if the slip composition indicated above is used, of 10400C to 12200C depending upon the intended purpose of the finished article. The firing process causes the material forming the sponge to be burnt away and also the slip to form a porous biscuit ceramic block of fine bone china.
An alternative slip mixture for producing an earthenware article comprises 25% china clay, 25% ball clay, 24% felspar and 26% silica sand to which is added water, sodium silicate and soda ash to produce the desired viscosity. The firing temperature varies between 950" and 12200 depending upon the intended purpose of the finished article.
CLAIMS 1. A method of producing a porous ceramic article comprising selecting a piece of resilient cellular material, immersing the piece of material in a ceramic slip so that the slip flows into the interstices of the material, squeezing the piece of material to remove excess slip, allowing the piece of material to dry out and then firing the piece of material at a temperature which is sufficient to cause formation of the porous ceramic article and the burning away of the cellular material.
2. A method according to Claim 1, in which the cellular material is squeezed and released while it is in the slip to ensure that the slip flows into the interstices of the material.
3. A method according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the surfaces of the cellular material which form the interstices are wetted with water prior to immersion in the slip.
4. A method according to Claim 1, in which the slip is composed of a mixture of fine bone china clay, sodium silicate and water.
5. A method according to Claim 4, in which the fine bone china clay comprises a mixture of calcined bone, cornish stone, china clay and ball clay in approximate quantities of 47.0%, 27.0%, 22.7% and 2.7% respectively.
6. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the piece of cellular material is fashioned to the desired shape of the ceramic article prior to being wetted and/or immersed in the slip.
7. A porous ceramic article when produced in accordance with the methods claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
Claims (7)
- Amendments to the claimshave been filed as follows 1. A method of producing a liquid retention block comprising selecting a piece of resilient cellular material, immersing the piece of material in a ceramic slip so that the slip flows into the interstices of the material, squeezing the piece of material to remove excess slip, allowing the piece of material to dry out and then firing the piece of material at a temperature which is sufficient to cause formation of the liquid retention block and the burning away of the cellular material.
- 2. A method according to Claim 1, in which the cellular material is squeezed and released while it is in the slip to ensure that the slip flows into the interstices of the material.
- 3. A method according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the surfaces of the cellular material which form the interstices are wetted with water prior to immersion in the slip.
- 4. A method according to Claim 1, in which the slip is composed of a mixture of fine bone china clay, sodium silicate and water.
- 5. A method according to Claim 4, in which the fine bone china clay comprises a mixture of calcined bone, cornish stone, china clay and ball clay in approximate quantities of 47.0%, 27.0%, 22.7% and 2.7% respectively.
- 6. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the piece of cellular material is fashioned to the desired shape of the ceramic article prior to being wetted and/or immersed in the slip.
- 7. A liquid retention block when produced in accordance with the methods claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
