Abstract
Lighweight ceramics are produced by firing a powder mixture of clay and a particulate natural or synthetic resin. The clay may be ordinary clay, clay slate, kaolin, chamosite, or mixture of these and the resins specified are polystyrene, phenolic resins, P.V.C., urea, polyurethane, polyethylene, polyisobutylene, latex rubber, silicone resins and cellulose acetate. The resin is preferably in the foamed condition with a particle size of 0,5 to 10 mm. and a compressibility at least equal to the shrinkage of the clay. A binder such as water glass may be added to the mixture which is then formed by pressing an extrusion and fired.
