Abstract

Active alumina, having not more than half the pores larger than 0.1 m is prepared from grains obtained by dehydrating alumina hydrates in a stream of hot gas. The grains, substantially all of which have particle sizes between 1 m and 25 m , are impregnated with water in an amount exceeding by not more than 8% the weight of water necessary to fill the pores of the alumina. They are then heated, shaped and reactivated. Alternatively a mixture of alumina with up to 30% of its weight of naphthalene or other material which decomposes on reactivation heating may be used in the initial step. The grains may be obtained by dehydrating hydragillite. Granules, briquettes and conglomerates may be obtained by extrusion, pressing or in a groove and fillet. A number of different pellets and briquettes of active alumina having size 2 to 5 mm., and of total porous volume 53 to 93 cc. per 100 g. including 15 to 38 c.c. of pores larger than 0.1 m are claimed per se.
