923,686. Retractable ball-point pens. U. LEGNANI. April 7, 1961 [April 9, 1960], No. 12533/61. Class 146 (3). In a retractable writing instrument having selectively advanceable writing units 16 such as ball-point ink reservoirs, each unit 16 is screwed on to its respective plunger member 20 and is surrounded by a helical coil spring 27 that abuts against and urges up the plunger member. The lower end of each spring 27 abuts against a step 28 in one of a number of bores 15 in the centre portion 12 of the barrel of the writing instrument. A member 25 coaxially attached to the centre portion 12 has a plurality of spring clips 26 corresponding to the number of writing units 16. When a particular writing unit is to be selected for writing, its respective plunger 20 is depressed in the direction of the arrow A, Fig. 2. A clip 26 associated with the plunger engages a step 22 retaining the writing u nit in its writing position. To release the writing unit, a tubular releasing member 31 having a button 29 protruding through a coaxial hole at the top of the instrument barrel, is pressed down over the spring clips 26, thereby releasing the one particular clip retaining the writing unit that has been in use. The tubular member 31 is spring- loaded with a helical spring 32. Each plunger has on its upper part 23 an indication as to what colour writing unit it corresponds to.
