A hatch cover comprises a number of sections grouped in hinged-together pairs, .e.g. 3, 4 and 5, 6 which for opening the hatch are moved on wheels 7 to a stowage space 8 defined by side frames which extend substantially to the same level as the hatch coaming 1. The first section, 3 or 5, of each pair is wider in the direction of stowing than the second section, 4 or 6, by an amount substantially corresponding to the height of the coaming. The side frames of the stowage 8 are provided with guide slots 11 and 12 which receive guide members 10, e.g. pins, fitted to the sections 3 and 5 respectively. The paired sections are connected together by pins 16, on the second section 4, which locate in slots 15, on the first section 5. The hatch is opened by a pulling cable 13, connected adjacent to the hinge arms of the furthestmost pair, 5 and 6, and passing a pulley 14 adjacent the hinged axis of the pair 3 and 4. The slots 11 and 12 are so disposed that upon opening the hatch the section 3 will pass over the slot 12 and it's pin 10 will locate in the slot 11 causing it to tip about the support member 9 to a vertical position, which movement simultaneously causes the following pair to be moved along, through rotation of the section 4 and the connection 15 and 16, until the pin 10 of the section 5 locates in the slot 12 to tip that section to a stowed vertical position. Movement in the opposite direction by a pulling cable (not shown) closes the hatch. The wheels 7 are eccentrically mounted so that the sections may be moved off seals. The pins 16 may be eccentrically mounted, or detachable. The sections may alternatively be pushed to the stowage space 8. A stowage space may be disposed at each end of the hatch, each arranged to accomodate a half of the total pairs of sections. A further embodiment describes the pairs of sections connected by links which have cam surfaces for tipping the sections.
